Ever heard of surfing the web?

Once upon a time, the Internet was more than ten sites run by five corporations. Before "social media" took over, we had fun 'surfing the web', which meant discovering new websites and browsing the net looking for anything cool. But it became harder and harder over time, with the corporate mega-sites eventually dominating everything, specifically designed to bring out the worst in people and make the shareholders' bottom line go up.

EXCEPT, escaping this walled garden is still possible! Many, MANY projects have sprung up in the shadows, attempting to recapture the magic of the early Internet. So many in fact, that I felt the need to bring them all together in one place, on an unprecedented scale. This is your gateway to a healthier, free-er, real-er Internet - this is the beach, get surfing!
